Parramatta is the second oldest settlement after Sydney. It is also the next largest CBD outside the Centre of Sydney and North Sydney. Parramatta is connected to Sydney by road, water (Sydney Harbour turns into Parramatta River that ferries travel on) and rail. It is located 24 km west of Sydney and only 6 km from the Year 2000 Olympic Site of Homebush Bay.
Historically, Parramatta, Aboriginal meaning, "place where the eels lie down" or "head of the river" was originally called Rose Hill. It was the agricultural centre for the Sydney settlement due to
its abundance of fertile soil and fresh water. Parramatta's crops saved the earlier Sydney settlement from famine.
Parramatta boasts many firsts of the white settlement of Australia including the first legal brewery.
Expeditions to the western interior of Australia started at Parramatta because it was accessible by water and cut travel time to that by land.
Parramatta Regional Park is the largest area of open space where visitors can enjoy a range of recreational activities along the banks of Parramatta River or
its fields, cycleways and facilities such as, picnicking, walking, cycling, field sports or just exploring the historical monuments and buildings throughout the Park.
Many cafés, eateries and bistro's line the streets of Parramatta and
its Mall. Night clubs and Public Bars decorate the city at night alongside its
restaurants. There are also many other venues for entertainment such as movie cinemas, bowling alley and retail outlets.
Come see the magical blend of a commercial centre, multicultural influences, retail outlets and native elements that make the City of Parramatta very characteristic.
