Governor Phillip selected Parramatta settlement in 1788 based on
its suitability for farming soil. A variety of plants were cultivated and cattle was introduced. The Governor built a small house on this site which replaced an original redoubt structure. Governor Hunter created an improved Government House in 1799 and Governor Macquarie extended it in 1815.
Today the structure has been preserved and is used as a restaurant for functions. Tours can also be taken through the house for a fee.
