Darling Harbour
The Darling Harbour is a cosmopolitan complex. It contains restaurants, cafes, retail outlets, nightclubs, bars, conference and exhibition centre, World's Largest movie screen at the Imax Cinema, Aquarium, Maritime Museum and more. There is always something suitable for all ages day or night.
Darling Harbour has recently undergone a major facelift. It now stands alongside the Euro-style Cockle Bay complex.
History
In the early 20th Century, Darling Harbour served as Sydney's railway goods yard and ship loading area. In 1959 the old finger wharves were demolished and Botany Bay had taken over as Sydney's major port. The State Government in 1984 made the decision to have Darling Harbour redeveloped. The original cosmopolitan Darling Harbour Complex was opened 4th May, 1988. In Year 2000, Darling Harbour celebrates it' s 12th Birthday.
Getting there
When visiting from the city, Darling Harbour is accessible via car, ferry, car, monorail or light rail.
What to See and Do
Panasonic IMAX Theatre - The world's largest movie screen that stands at more than 8 storeys high. Audiences will experience films to remember their visit. Films show on an hourly basis daily.
Australian National Maritime Museum - see exhibitions of ship-wrecked treasures, naval memorabilia and experience a real naval destroyer moored in the harbour..
Star City - taking in the city's skyline Star City offers a world class casino, 2 theatres, a nightclub, several bars and restaurants. Something happening there 24 hours.
Sydney Aquarium - presents Australia's unique and diverse aquatic life. There are 4 main areas to see and experience Open Ocean, Sydney Harbour, Seal Sanctuary and Great Barrier Reef. Take a walk under the ocean in the Aquarium's tunnel under the open ocean display, it will make you feel like you're swimming in there with them…even the SHARKS!!!
The Chinese Garden of Friendship - a Chinese designed garden that encourages peace and tranquillity in the heart of the city. A place of true but beautiful illusions.
Cockle Bay Wharf - a Euro-style experience, the place to go when planning to snack in the cafes, dine in the restaurants, sip at the bars or out right party.
PowerHouse Museum - A cultural and diverse exhibition. The museum has displays about science, technology, decorative arts, design and Australian Social History. A rare place that allows hands-on experience for everyone of all ages. The museum also has a regularly changing program of exhibitions and events.
Monorail - Get around one end of Darling Harbour to the other with the overhead monorail. It also takes you through the centre of the city. A great way to get to Darling Harbour when travelling by Public Transport.
