Penrith Whitewater
Stadium is a purpose built whitewater course based on the technology
adopted by the thermal power generation stations using water pumps to
transport the water in and out of their system.
It is a venue for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games
for the whitewater events.
The course is 320 metres in length and water is
pumped at 14 cubic metres per second. The stadium is open to the public
to also enjoy the course.
There is a cafe on the location where tasty fresh
meals and snacks are prepared on site.
The site is worth a visit where you might even get
the chance to see international Olympic Medal hopefuls in training or
tackle the rapids yourself under guided tours that can be booked through
the venue.
The Penrith Whitewater Stadium is part of the
Sydney International Regatta Centre that also includes the rowing
course.
When no events are on the venue is
free to enter. On the day we were here a few different Olympiads from
different countries were training taking on the rapids. (we
found ourselves watching for quite a while).
Update 10-9-2000
Olympic venues now in lockdown stage. Venues may not be open to the
general public. Please check with the venue or SOCOG.
