Ben Chifley, one of Australia's most respected Prime
Minister's who led the country between July 1945 and December 1949, was
born and raised in Bathurst.
A locomotive driver for the railways, Chifley
commenced his political career after a bitter experience with his union
in the Great Strike of 1917.
Chifley's Government was responsible for founding
the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, QANTAS and TAA airlines, The
Joint Coal Board, The Stevedoring Commission, The National Shipping
Line, restructuring and expansion of CSIRO and the Australian National
University.
Ben lived in this little home pictured above with
his wife Elizabeth who he married in 1914. The couple had no
children. He died in 13th June 1951 from a fatal heart attack. |
