The Fort Scratchley site was originally a shipping
operations control centre for Newcastle. It has had many name changes over the years until
its present name. Between 1804 and 1858, it burned continuously a coal fire beacon on a
signal mast until Nobby's light was built.
The Army was granted use of the Fort Scratchley site between August 1843 and November
1972. The Fort was used to defend Newcastle in 1942 when a Japanese submarine surfaced
shelling the city.
The Fort is now used as a Maritime Museum with public access to view exhibits in the
army barracks and the Fort grounds. Visit Fort Scratchley to learn more about
its history
