Port Arthur
Port Arthur
is a penal settlement that operated between 1830 and 1877. A total of
12,000 prisoners passed through Port Arthur. It was to become
virtually self-sufficient having inmates produce cut timber, bricks,
nails, garden tiles, flour and footwear. Prisoners worked in total
silence based on the principle of isolation rather than discipline. A
series of bushfires has damaged the buildings on the site and are
gradually being restored.
